Dota 2 Item Build Guide: Core & Situational Items (7.41)
Guides · Independent community strategy site
An item build guide answers the question "how should this hero itemize?" — which core items to rush, which situational picks to swap in, and when each timing matters. The general shape is always the same: starting items, then core items, then situational or late-game items. But the real skill is understanding why a build works, not memorizing a fixed order.
The Structure of an Item Build
Most builds split into phases. Data sites built on Stratz break them into Starting items, Mid-game (15–35 minutes) and Late-game (35+ minutes), attaching win rate and pick rate to each item. A useful mental model:
- Starting items — cheap regen and stats to survive the lane.
- Core items — the power spikes your hero needs to function.
- Situational items — counters to the enemy lineup (magic resistance, dispel, break).
- Late-game items — six-slot luxury upgrades and refreshers.
How Data Sites Rank Builds
- Spectral.gg labels items Common (high purchase rate), Strong (clear win-rate gain) and Critical (key timing), showing purchase rate, median buy timing and win-rate lift versus games without the item. It's built on Stratz data and focused on high-rank players.
- Dota2ProTracker uses only 7000+ MMR and pro matches, showing top builds and skill order by position — the closest thing to "the current meta answer".
- Dotabuff pulls win rates from real matches and offers Item Timings, the average acquisition time of key items in winning games, to judge when to hit your spikes.
The universal advice from these sites: don't blindly copy a fixed order. Combine win rate, item timing and matchup knowledge to understand the "why", and filter by bracket (e.g. Immortal-only) where it matters.
Strong 7.41 Items to Know
- Consecrated Wraps (2,600 gold, built from Shawl at 450 gold + 10% magic resistance) grants magic resistance, roughly 382 HP, and a 360 all-damage shield plus 15% move speed on taking damage. It's common on tanky cores and offlaners like Necrophos, Pudge, Bristleback, Primal Beast, Tidehunter and Legion Commander. Coach BSJ called it the strongest item in the game at one point.
- Bloodstone was reworked in 7.41: Veil of Discord (1,700) + Soul Booster (3,000) for 4,700 total, granting +15 Intelligence, +650 HP, about 630 mana, 20% spell lifesteal (4% vs creeps), a Bloodpact that boosts spell lifesteal to 60% for 5 seconds, and a new Spell Weakness aura making enemies in 1,200 range take +12% spell damage.
- Mage Slayer returned to the meta when its effect changed from 20 magic damage per second to 40 physical damage per second, synergizing with Ember Spirit and Pangolier while countering Bloodstone mids.
- Shiva's Guard was reworked and performs strongly (secondhand sources put its win rate near 62.5%, appearing about every fourth game).
- In total, 7.41 added 17 new items. (Win rates and purchase rates above are secondhand aggregates — verify against a data site before quoting.)
The Neutral Item System (Madstone Crafting)
Since 7.38+, neutral items no longer drop randomly from creeps. Instead, clearing camps drops Madstones; once you've collected enough you craft a neutral item by picking one Artifact and one Enchantment into a dedicated slot. Each player carries only one neutral item at a time, and it can't be sold. Tiers unlock at 5:00 / 15:00 / 25:00 / 35:00 / 60:00, costing 5 / 15 / 25 / 35 / 45 Madstones respectively; after 70:00 the cap lifts and you can re-roll Tier 5 items freely.
