Dota 2 Hero Guide: Hero Builds & Where to Find Them

A hero guide (also called a hero build) is a player-created loadout that suggests an item order and ability leveling. You can use it in-game or share it with others. Dota 2 grew out of a Warcraft III mod and remains deeply complex, so for a new player the fastest path isn't theory-crafting items yourself — it's picking a reliable guide, following it, and adjusting once you're comfortable.

What Is a Hero Guide (Hero Build)?

A hero guide is built by players and recommends items and ability priorities. You can select it in-game or create and share your own through the Hero Builds Editor. Guides usually cover the hero's role, strengths and weaknesses, and tips for each ability. The same hero builds completely differently across patches and positions, so a good guide labels its version or position. For new players, a guide is the most direct way to understand a hero.

Which Heroes Get the Most Guides

The Stratz platform counts guides per hero and markets itself on "learn from the best". In its Heroes → Guides view, the most-covered heroes include Rubick, Undying, Shadow Fiend, Pudge, Lina, Treant Protector, Invoker, Windranger, Mirana and Hoodwink. Rubick leads with roughly 11,900 guides, with Undying close behind at around 11,800 (figures change live — check the page for current numbers).

Reading a Guide: Sniper as an Example

Take a beginner Sniper guide (a YouTube guide from the 7.31c era) to see what a build actually covers:

• Role and strengths — Sniper is beginner-friendly, dealing huge damage through farming and items with a clean attack animation that makes last-hitting easy. His weakness is being a "glass cannon": fragile, and deadly when a gap-closer gets on top of him.
• Abilities — Shrapnel is a ground-targeted AoE slow and damage with three charges that don't stack, so spread them out. Headshot is a passive chance for bonus damage and a small slow. Take Aim extends his range so he can hit towers from outside their attack radius. Assassinate, his ultimate, fires a long-range, high-damage shot with a mini-stun.
• Positioning — play for position; better to lose a hit than to die for damage. If the enemy burns multiple players trying to kill you and ruins their formation, your team usually wins the fight.

Start with in-game guides, then branch into deeper breakdowns on external sites. Freshness matters most: patches rework items and skill orders, so prefer recently updated, well-rated guides over stale ones.
