Dota 2 Items: Categories, Secret Shop & Neutral Tiers

Database · Independent community strategy site

Dota 2's item system is easier to navigate once you understand its four categories and how they connect. This page breaks down the item classes, what the Secret Shop is for, and how neutral items work in the current patch.

How Many Items Are There

Item counts vary by source and patch. A third-party tally put the total at 237 items as of April 2026 (moderate reliability), while an earlier Red Bull guide counted 208 (150 purchasable plus 58 neutral). The exact figure floats with every patch — treat specific totals as approximate and reference Liquipedia's current catalog.

The Four Item Categories

  • Basic items — cheap components that build into larger items.
  • Upgraded items — assembled from basic items.
  • Secret Shop items — exclusive components bought at the Secret Shop.
  • Neutral items — non-purchasable items earned through gameplay.

The Secret Shop

Each side has one Secret Shop (usable by both teams) that sells exclusive components like Demon Edge, Mystic Staff, Sacred Relic, Eaglesong, Reaver and Hyperstone. These are key parts of late-game items such as Black King Bar, Scythe of Vyse, Radiance, Butterfly and Daedalus.

Neutral Items: Tiers and Tokens

Neutral items are divided into Tiers 1–5. Since 7.41, Tier 1 neutrals are available from 0:00 (previously 5:00). They can't be bought, cost no gold, and occupy a dedicated slot.

The Neutral Item Token system (introduced around 7.38) limits each player to one token per tier and five neutral items total per match. Activating a token lets you pick one of five items from that tier.

New Items in 7.41

Patch 7.41 added 17 new items (9 shop items and 8 neutrals), including Wizard Hat, Shawl, Charm Stone, Splintmail, Consecrated Wraps, Crella's Crozier, Essence Distiller, Specialist's Array and Hydra's Breath, while removing Ring of Health.

(The "237 items" figure comes from a single third-party source — verify against Liquipedia.)
